Nestled at the foot of three colossal volcanoes, this sun-drenched destination boasts a pleasant climate reminiscent of spring. With its stunning skies and the bright white sillar stone used for construction, Arequipa is truly a must-visit location.

What to Know When Visiting Arequipa

When you visit Arequipa, consider staying at La Hostería Boutique Hotel, a charming colonial-style hotel located in the historic center. Why You Should Visit Arequipa

Arequipa lies along the route from Lima and Huacachina to Cusco, Peru's most famous tourist destination. Even without its convenient location, it attracts many South American travelers in search of sun and culture. I found Arequipa to be a trap for travel enthusiasts—once you’re here, it’s easy to get captivated and want to stay longer because life is just so enjoyable and exciting. After spending a few weeks at a remote archaeological site, I spent five days wandering through cafes, museums, and participating in Peru's Independence Day festival. After those days flew by, I saw no reason not to stay another five days.

How to Get to Arequipa

While the bus ride might seem long for those unaccustomed to traveling in Peru, Arequipa is still very accessible. Most travelers arrive from Huacachina or Lima on their way to Cusco. It’s only about a 6-hour journey from Puno on Lake Titicaca, and a 15-hour trip from La Paz isn’t too daunting either. Here’s a quick rundown of travel times from major locations:

From Cusco – 11 hours

Where to Stay in Arequipa

In Arequipa, you have two main choices for accommodation: the bustling city center or the tranquil Yanahuara area, which offers stunning views of the volcanoes. I opted to stay in the center, as it’s home to the most hostels. While you might have to endure the noise of traffic in other Latin cities, Arequipa’s center is surprisingly quiet, well-equipped, and close to all attractions.

Yanahuara also has plenty to offer. If you ask locals where they usually eat or hang out, they’ll likely steer you toward Yanahuara. This area provides a more authentic glimpse into life in Arequipa and undoubtedly offers the best panoramic views of the city from the Mirador Yanahuara.

Fantastic Activities in Arequipa

The first must-see destination is the Santa Catalina Monastery. You might be weary of religious sites, but this one truly stands out. It resembles a small city within Arequipa rather than just a single building. Upon entering, you'll find yourself lost in a peaceful maze of fountains, gardens, chapels, and courtyards. The colors here are striking—streets adorned with vibrant geraniums in shades of blue or yellow-red.

Founded over 400 years ago as a residence for nuns, the monastery still houses a significant religious community living in areas not open to tourists. As I wandered through the monastery, I could hear their singing and prayers. Many rooms remain preserved as they were in the past, making me feel as though I was traveling back in time.

Entrance fees are around 40 soles, and if you wish to hire a guide, it’s an additional 30 soles.

Andean Sanctuaries Museum

Arequipa isn’t built on the foundations of an Inca city like many other places in Peru, but the country’s most famous civilization thrived on the surrounding volcanoes. The Incas practiced child sacrifice to the mountain gods they believed resided atop the great peaks. Five hundred years ago, a 14-year-old girl was taken to the summit of Volcan Misti and sacrificed. Her body was preserved in ice for centuries until an American explorer discovered it in 1995.

Now known as Juanita, the museum, in an unusual twist, houses her remarkably well-preserved remains. Her hair and nails are intact, making it seem as if she’s just sleeping. The museum narrates her story through artifacts found around her.

It’s located a few streets from Plaza de Armas, with an entrance fee of 20 soles.

Explore Arequipa Through a Free Walking Tour

For a deeper understanding and broader perspective on local life, a free walking tour is an excellent option. We recommend a 2.5-hour tour with a local guide who truly knows the city. You can voluntarily tip as you wish after the tour, so the guide genuinely aims to help you explore the city in a unique way.

Alpaca Mundo: Relaxing with Alpacas

You simply must experience alpacas when you visit Peru. Alpaca Mundo, a free zoo, will fulfill your dream of meeting these adorable animals. I also enjoyed the demonstrations of traditional textile weaving by locals. Peruvian textiles are among the best in the world, thanks to alpacas and vicuñas.

Learning to weave wool into ponchos for centuries and dyeing vibrant colors while playing with alpacas is a delightful experience. Arequipa is also a fantastic place to buy alpaca sweaters, whether at the San Camillo market or in designer shops in the city center. I bought a baby alpaca sweater here, and it has become one of my favorite wardrobe pieces.
