In Japan, the heartwarming tale of a dog named Hachiko has become a cherished legend. Back in the 1920s, Hachiko would accompany his owner to Shibuya Station every morning and would return in the afternoon to wait for him after work. This daily ritual continued for nearly a year and a half, until one fateful day when Hachiko's owner passed away unexpectedly from a stroke and never returned.

Despite the loss, Hachiko continued to show his unwavering loyalty by returning to the station every day for nearly a decade, waiting patiently for his beloved owner. This touching story has resonated deeply with the Japanese people, who flocked to meet the faithful dog, a symbol of the Japanese value of "chugi," or steadfast loyalty.

Cultural Legacy and Love for Dogs

Even today, the nation honors Hachiko's story; it is taught in schools, and April 8th is celebrated as "Hachiko Day." Furthermore, Japan has a long-standing cultural connection with dogs, evidenced by archaeological finds of dog graves dating back thousands of years, showing that dogs were not just pets but considered family members.

Four-Legged Heroes – Bringing Friendship to Life

The Japan Rescue Association (JRA) was established to transform this bond of friendship into action during emergencies. After the devastating Hanshin earthquake in 1995, which claimed over 6,400 lives, Japan recognized the urgent need for a network of trained rescue dogs. Prior to this, the country had virtually no infrastructure for rescue dog teams, with only a handful of trained dogs available.

Rescue dogs have played vital roles in numerous natural disasters across Japan, from the landslide in Kyotango in 2006 to the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016. Currently, JRA has four active rescue dogs deployed in disaster areas, with seven more undergoing training.

Training and Emotional Support

This organization not only trains rescue dogs but also therapy dogs, providing emotional support in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, and emergency situations. The dogs are typically selected from reputable breeders and undergo up to three years of training to become professional rescue dogs. Many therapy dogs are rescues themselves, trained to offer comfort to those in need.

Steps Forward

Since partnering with The Intrepid Foundation in September 2024, JRA has received over AUD 25,000 from generous donors. Participants on Intrepid’s Japan tours not only learn about Hachiko’s story but also have the opportunity to contribute to this worthwhile organization, expressing their gratitude for these loyal companions, humanity's closest friends.

Moreover, the JRA rescue dogs have been deployed to neighboring countries such as Turkey, India, and Nepal to assist in various natural disasters. This initiative reflects the profound humanitarian spirit and the bond between humans and animals in challenging times.
