Every time I return to Mauna Lani, it feels like coming home. Nestled on the stunning Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii, this resort has been a part of my life since childhood. My family has created beautiful memories here since 1994, when my parents chose it as their honeymoon destination. They later decided to return annually, just the two of them, to savor private moments surrounded by nature.

When my sister and I were finally old enough to join these trips in 2005, I vividly remember the thrill of indulging in delicious meals and being greeted with fragrant leis and the friendly smiles of the resort staff.

The resort features more than 300 modernized rooms and suites, adorned with natural wood furnishings and breathtaking ocean views. Each visit feels familiar, from the welcoming front desk staff to the poolside team, as if I'm reconnecting with old friends.

This resort caters to a diverse range of travelers, from honeymooning couples to multi-generational families. It's delightful to see the green Hawaiian turtles (honu) basking on the sandy shores and volcanic rocks around the area.

The culinary experience at Mauna Lani is an essential part of the stay. The first time I returned after the resort's renovation, the two on-site restaurants left a lasting impression. I enjoyed unforgettable dishes, especially the malasadas for breakfast. The Canoe House quickly became my favorite, offering a rich menu that showcases local cuisine with a creative twist.

Another spot I adore is the Surf Shack, a beachside eatery perfect for lunch after a surf session. The menu here consistently satisfies even the pickiest eaters. One dish that still lingers in my memory from my recent visit is the sticky date pudding—absolutely divine!

Activities and Attractions Nearby

Beyond the delicious meals, Mauna Lani offers a plethora of exciting activities, including three swimming pools, a 36-hole golf course, and a cultural program introducing the history of this sacred land. I was particularly impressed with the kids' club, where families can confidently leave their children in engaging and enriching activities.

Additionally, a delightful bonus to our trip was Mika, the resort's friendly dog, who often stops by to play with guests. Each time I saw Mika frolicking in the clear waters, my heart filled with joy.

Exploring Beyond the Resort

While Mauna Lani offers so much, I always encourage visitors to explore the surrounding areas at least once. On our latest trip in 2025, my family drove along narrow roads through the hills and valleys of six volcanoes. I particularly enjoyed visiting Kailua-Kona, famous for its Kona coffee and diving activities.

We wandered through the Hilo Farmers Market, savoring delicious dishes made from fresh seafood and tropical fruits. We even made a stop at the Mauna Loa macadamia nut center to pick up souvenirs for friends.

Why I Keep Coming Back to Mauna Lani

Words can't fully capture my emotions when I return to Mauna Lani. The cherished memories with family and joyful moments with loved ones have forged a deep connection to this place. Whenever there's a holiday or a long weekend, I find myself wishing to come back.

Even though prices have risen following renovations, the value of the memories and emotions this place offers is truly priceless.
