Returning After 15 Years
It's been 15 years since I last visited Cameron Highlands, a place I once adored. This region has changed significantly since my first visit. While many say that tourism has boomed, the soul of this land remains intact. Yes, the two main towns here are livelier than before, but if you know where to look, the untouched beauty still exists.
Weather and Scenery
Located in the northwest of Malaysia, Cameron Highlands boasts a cool climate year-round, making it a perfect escape from the tropical heat. With temperatures around 20°C, it's incredibly pleasant. The winding roads leading up the mountain might be a bit challenging for those prone to motion sickness, but the breathtaking views along the way are absolutely worth it.
Don't Be Fooled by the Towns
Brinchang and Tanah Rata, the two main towns, can be quite crowded and have lost some of their former simplicity. Brinchang feels more like a city with its tall buildings, while Tanah Rata offers a more relaxed vibe, though still bustling with tourists. However, for nature lovers, these towns serve merely as convenient resting spots before venturing into the misty forests and tea hills that surround the area.
The Best Time to Explore
Avoid visiting Cameron Highlands during the summer or from November to February when many trails are closed due to rain. For the best experience, steer clear of these peak months, as popular attractions tend to get overcrowded during these times.

How to Experience Cameron Highlands
If you're short on time, a half-day tour of the tea hills, misty forests, and local farms is a great option. Just be sure to skip the classic misty forest — I'll explain more about that later! For hiking enthusiasts, there are plenty of trails starting from Tanah Rata. And if you prefer a bit more freedom, renting a scooter to explore on your own is a fantastic idea.
Accommodation Options
Tanah Rata is the ideal base for independent travelers without their own transport. It has a bus station, access to various hiking routes, and plenty of dining and lodging options. Some interesting places to stay include BRICKS Backpackers, Rovers Inn, and Zenith Hotel. Each offers a unique style, ranging from simple to luxurious.
Exploring the Tea Hills
Cameron Highlands is famous for its three tea hills, with the BOH Tea Centre at Sungai Palas being a must-visit. This is a perfect stop to learn about the history and production process of BOH tea. Driving up the narrow hill roads, surrounded by lush green slopes, you feel like you're floating in the air when you reach the BOH centre.
The History of Tea Planting
Tea cultivation in Cameron Highlands began in 1929 with British entrepreneur J.A. Russell. The cool climate and nutrient-rich soil have allowed the tea here to thrive with a unique flavor. Today, BOH produces about 80% of Malaysia's black tea.
The Real Feel
While tourism may have altered some aspects of Cameron Highlands, stepping away from the hustle and bustle of the towns reveals the pristine beauty of the tea hills and misty forests. This is a feeling you won't find anywhere else. If I get the chance to return to Malaysia, I will undoubtedly seize the opportunity to visit this enchanting place once more.
