Shocking News from Alaska Airlines

Victoria Waldron, a flight attendant with Alaska Airlines, has filed a lawsuit against Stumptown Coffee Roasters in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington on March 27. The lawsuit stems from a hot coffee accident that occurred during a flight on April 1, 2024.

What Happened?

According to her account, about 30 minutes before landing in Phoenix, the coffee maker in the galley suddenly experienced a “serious malfunction with no warning,” causing hot coffee, grounds, and boiling water to erupt violently, resulting in severe burns to her chest and other parts of her body.

Serious Condition and Concerns for Her Unborn Child

At the time of the incident, she was pregnant and immediately suffered intense pain. Not only was she worried about her own well-being, but she also feared for the safety of her unborn child. The incident left her with permanent scars, psychological distress, and the need for long-term skincare, with potential future surgeries or cosmetic treatments looming.

Concerns Over Stumptown's Coffee Packaging

She alleges that Stumptown's coffee packaging is unsafe and poorly designed, making it unsuitable for use on airplanes. She claims that Stumptown failed to design, test, or verify the packaging for high-pressure and high-temperature conditions encountered on flights.

Similar Incidents Have Occurred

She asserts that there was a design flaw, a lack of hazard warnings, and a breach of implied warranty. Notably, there have been at least nine similar incidents reported before hers, which Stumptown was informed about yet took no corrective action. Instead, they continued to supply the same packaging without any changes.

Union Statement

Her union issued a safety notice two months prior, warning about the dangers posed by this coffee machine — that it “spits out hot coffee and grounds” — and they suspect that the switch to Stumptown was the cause of the accident.

Flight Attendant Injuries

In recent months, at least nine flight attendants have been injured due to hot coffee and grounds spewing from the old B/E Aerospace coffee machines on various aircraft. This situation is a serious concern that needs immediate attention.

Investigation and Remedies

The management of Alaska Airlines has begun investigating the root cause of the problem and has identified several potential solutions to address the situation. However, implementing complete remedies will take considerable time.

Call to Halt B/E Aerospace Coffee Machines

Last week, the Aviation Safety, Health, and Security Committee (ASHSC) sent an official request to management to stop using the B/E Aerospace coffee machines until physical remedies are put in place. While this may inconvenience some aircraft that would lack coffee makers, the Committee believes that allowing further injuries to flight attendants is unacceptable.

Management's Response

Unfortunately, management has rejected this request, putting the physical safety and health of both staff and passengers at risk for the sake of a few cups of coffee. Alaska Airlines stated that the rollout of Stumptown included ground and in-flight testing with over 200 samples, along with consideration of more than 20 different variables.

What’s Happening with the Coffee Machines?

Interestingly, Alaska Airlines is not the defendant in this lawsuit. They have been aware of a recurring hazard from at least nine previous injury cases. The AFA (Association of Flight Attendants) reported that they requested the management to recall the old B/E coffee machines, but this was denied.

Is Stumptown to Blame?

Alaska's request for the installation of Brew Shields indicates they were aware of the risks associated with the old configuration. They have stated that they are involved in product testing, including filter packaging sizes and compatibility with in-flight coffee machines. This certainly raises questions about standard negligence!

Preliminary Conclusion

While it remains unclear who is at fault in this matter, it is evident that passengers often prefer Stumptown over Starbucks. This marks a significant difference compared to Delta (which serves Starbucks). Coffee isn’t the only thing that poses dangers; exploding soda cans have also injured Southwest flight attendants. Typically, coffee and tea only harm passengers.
