Discovering Nova Scotia

If you’re a nature lover, a history buff, or simply a foodie, Nova Scotia will delight you with its plethora of exciting destinations. From Grand Pre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg, and the bustling Halifax waterfront brimming with seafood, there’s so much to explore. But beyond these well-known spots, there are many unique places you shouldn't miss. After a week wandering through Annapolis Valley, Yarmouth, Acadian Shores, South Shore, and Halifax, I've uncovered some intriguing locations that deserve a spot on your travel list.

10 Unique Places You Should Visit

If you’re planning a trip to Nova Scotia, here are 10 quirky stops and must-try dishes that you won’t want to miss.

1. Mad Hatter Wine Bar, Annapolis Royal

Tucked away behind a bookstore and leather shop, Mad Hatter Wine Bar is a delightful surprise for those who think they are just shopping. This cozy wine bar serves a selection of wines along with Nova Scotia’s specialty snacks. In 2023, they completed a lovely backyard patio with stunning views of the Annapolis River at sunset. It quickly became one of my favorite stops on the trip.

2. Buoy Wall, Yarmouth

If you're into photography, Buoy Wall in Yarmouth is the perfect spot. This wall is adorned with old buoys salvaged from the sea, creating a beautiful backdrop that pays tribute to Nova Scotia’s fishing heritage. It’s also a standout stop on the way to the Cape Forchu lighthouse.

3. Xena’s Bread and Butter Cafe, Halifax

Xena’s Bread and Butter Cafe in Halifax is a 2D artistic restaurant where each wall tells its own story. Featuring monochromatic murals of famous locations from the Philippines and Canada, the cafe serves dishes that blend the cuisines of both countries. It’s a fantastic place to meet friends or work remotely.

4. Blue Rocks, near Lunenburg

While many flock to Lunenburg for photos with the Bluenose, the small village of Blue Rocks is also worth a visit. Just a 6-minute drive from Lunenburg, this quaint fishing village boasts beautiful green rocks along the coastline. It’s an ideal spot for photographers. I visited during sunset and captured some stunning reflections on the water.

5. Lighthouse, Annapolis Royal

The coastal walking path in Annapolis Royal is charming and perfect for sunset views. Don’t miss the iconic pepper pot-shaped lighthouse built in 1889 and restored in 2016. What makes this lighthouse special is its location near the town’s commercial area rather than on a point of land.

6. Maud Lewis’ House, near Digby

Maud Lewis’ house near Digby is an exact replica of the home where the folk artist lived. Nestled in the garden of retired fisherman Murray Ross, there’s also a small shop selling works by local artists available for purchase on the honor system. If you’re lucky like I was, you might get to chat with Murray during your visit.

7. Moon Mist Ice Cream, Nova Scotia

You can’t visit Nova Scotia without trying Moon Mist ice cream. This famous Atlantic treat combines banana, grape, and bubblegum flavors. Not only is it delicious, but it’s also visually striking. I enjoyed a scoop at Sugah Confectionary & Ice Cream Emporium during a leisurely stroll along the Halifax waterfront.

8. Shag Harbour UFO Interpretive Centre, Shag Harbour

One destination I was eager to visit was the Shag Harbour UFO Interpretive Centre. Unfortunately, I passed through the area too late and missed the opening hours. This center recounts an event from 1967 when a UFO reportedly crashed in the harbour, witnessed by numerous locals.

9. Tidal Bore Rafting, Bay of Fundy

This is one of the rare places in the world to experience tidal bore rafting. Tidal bore is a natural phenomenon where the rising tide creates waves that flow upstream. With the extreme tidal changes at the Bay of Fundy, you can ride the waves in a thrilling white-water rafting experience.

10. Fried Pepperoni, Halifax

These days, you can fry just about anything, including pepperoni. This Halifax delicacy was created by the Kielbratowski brothers in the 1950s and 60s. You can find this dish on nearly every pub menu in the city, typically served with sweet mustard dip. Crispy and delicious, you won’t regret adding this to your must-try list.
